Istanbul Residency Program Open Studio Day

Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Centre hosts an open studio event with its Istanbul Residency Program artists; Katherine Hymers, Can Altay, FrenchMottershead, Stefanos Tsivopoulos,  Hans Rosenström, Asli Cavusoglu, Alina Viola Gumiller, Emre Hüner, Karolin Fisceki and Ha Za Vu Zu.
Participating artists are supported by the Arts Council, England; EU Culture Fund; FONDS BKVB, The Netherlands; FRAME, Finland and Platform Garanti, Istanbul.

Time is a leitmotif underscoring much of Hymers work, heightened by the use of carefully framed, composed images and a refusal of the conventions of plot and narrative within the moving image. For Platform Garanti's Open Studio Day, Hymers will present a work in progress. This double screen video brings together two independent images, captured in Istanbul, to create a sense of implied narrative, without explicitly detailing any narrative for the viewer. Instead, movement, or a lack of movement, are used to create a tension between presence and absence between the two given images, while simultaneously encouraging the viewer to read these images as a whole.

I am in residence at Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Centre, Istanbul, from 11 April 2009 to 11 July 2009. Platform Garanti CAC acts as a dynamic catalyst for the dissemination, research and practice of contemporary art in Istanbul, providing a meeting point for exchange between contemporary artists, curators and critics.

Closer - ANTI 2008

Closer - 26 October 2008 12noon- 10pm Private home (Snellmaninkatu 22 C)

Entering a small apartment, alone, the viewer detects faint traces of a possible occupant. The ticking of clocks in empty rooms further emphasising the quiet intimacy of this private space.

Closer is a further development in Hymers' interest in the idea of the gaze, and the viewer's complicity within the work.

Please see comments section for review.

ANTI Seminar - How Contemporary Art Came Home

25 September 2008

Artists have long been drawn to the potential dramatics of domestic space. Filmmakers, painters, theatre- makers and any number of novelists have mapped our living spaces through centuries of change.
But what happens when contemporary artists move beyond description and illustration and enter these spaces, producing work in them rather than about them? What happens when artists use these private worlds as both a place to make work and a place to show work? What happens when the private becomes public as audiences enter a living space which is not their own?
It is these questions that this years artists working in private homes will have approached throughout their process. And it is these questions that this year's seminar seeks to investigate - what happens when contemporary art approaches domestic space as a generative environment? How Contemporary Art Came Home gathers artists, writers and curators to discuss this central theme to ANTI 2008.
Speakers include Jane Greenfield, Pekka Kantonen, Curious, Teema Maki, Katherine Hymers and xxx Group.
